Hi Jo,

On the 31 May, it is World No Tobacco day. The newly established Smoke-Free Illawarra (fromerly Itcch) would like to launch their new name at a media event for that day. We were hoping that the logo that the students are working on would be ready in the next couple of weeks so that we can prepare for the launch. We are not expectating the posters/messages etc, but just the logo. Do you think this is possible??

We are looking at speakers for the day around the topic of women and smoking as that is the theme for this year. It is an open morning tea and students will be invited to attend. It is likely to be at Ribbonwood Centre at Dapto.

Thanks
Lisa

Hi Gridpunk,

Some great and varied designs! Fabo work and very exciting for us to work with such great creative minds.
Thanks for the notes on your designs. It is interesting to see the different angles you consider when coming up with the designs.

I have passed your designs through the committee and have some feedback that may improve the overall design of the final logo.

Overall, the first concept is the most appealing. As they are clear, straight forward and strong and as you say the simplest and easiest to relate to. Whilst we like the concept of promoting a positive message about quitting and the feel of the other designs, the tree/lung concept appears a bit too complicated of a concept and not so punchy. Can become confused with an environmental group.

One of my favourite fonts is in the last design, with the s and f joined and the smaller Illawarra. I would like to see this font used with a different image - perhaphs the butt out.

Some specific comments on the first two alternatives that would be good to see worked on:
For the first alternative - the smoke free font looks a little too spread out, the s as a smoke is good and the I for illawarra seems to work. But the overall size and look just doesn't seem to fit quite right.

The second design looks great - we would be interested to see the butt on the side, or incorporated into the blocky compact construction - somehow.

Also, a thought to keep in mind, that this logo will be used on future posters on smoking prevention messages, so the graphic used needs to be kept in proportion and not be to large to overwhelm the message on the poster (if that makes sense).

Hope this is of some assistance, and we look forward to the modifications.
We are hoping to review all of the logos from each group on Wed 26 May, so if you could send through the final images that would be wonderful.

Happy to clarify any issues you would like to discuss.

For World No Tobacco 31 May we will be using this day to launch our new name and image. Attached are more details.
You are all invited to attend.

Cheers
Lisa

Hi Lisa

This is Bill from Gridpunk. We had a good think using the feedback you responded to us with and have come up with a few ideas.

As you responded positively to the ‘butt it out’ cigarette we have been experimenting with a few different compositions. One in particular that we feel is strong is the joining of the S and F to form a wisp of smoke rising from the cigarette butt, this uses the dynamic text layout with a big SMOKE FREE and little ILLAWARRA.

Attached is a pdf showing some variations of this concept as well as some sketches of the actual cigarette butt. At the moment we are feeling that number 1 and number 6 have the most potential.

Hope to hear from you soon!

-Bill & the Gridpunk team.

Hi Bill,

Some great work again by your team.
Thanks again for your contribution on this project.
I have discussed your work with the Committee and have some ideas on how to make this logo move forward.

I thought it would be easier if I type up the some notes separately, so I can cut out some images...see attached.

I am happy to discuss this with you verbally if it is not clear, I am on campus this week, so just send an email or phone and I can meet you somewhere.

Our plans at this stage, if it fits within your schedule, is to finalise the logo as soon as possible.... As on Friday I would like to be able to go to a printer and have the logo printed on an A2 size poster for the launch on Monday.

If you are able to have the logo as a pdf image for printing at this size that would be great.!

Thanks again to all your team.
Cheers
Lisa

Our email:

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for the feedback, we've put together a few options based around your comments, one of the main distinctions we have been a bit torn over is the specific font that will best represent the brand identity.

It may look like a small issue but both of the fonts selected carry their own rich histories. As such I have divided the document into variations using the two different fonts.

Of the 2 we feel best represent the brand identity, the first is Gotham, a more modern sans serif font, developed in the year 2000. Gotham has been steadily gaining popularity with corporations and charities over the past few years. An example of it in use can be seen on the cornerstone of the Freedom Tower, which will stand at the world trade center site in New York. It specializes in bolder geometric letters which can be easily read and crisp professional look.

The second typeface is Helvetica, a classic sans serif typeface and possibly the most world renown. It is a simple, elegant, tried and test typeface that has stood the test of time and over the past 15 years is making a massive resurgence in commercial 'wordmarks' (image-less logos).

Haha, sorry for the history lesson but there has been some controversy within the group over which font suited the look, when it really comes down to it all you really need to do is select the logo that appeals the most to you aesthetically.

Other than the font war waging inside Gridpunk, we've had a quick look at the placement of the cigarette butt in relation to the text. Because the text sits in a rigid block, the image can be placed in-front of the text, behind it or even on-top. This versatility can be seen as a good thing when considering size restraints.

The document has been structured with small changes in each logo being designated letters (a & b) while larger variations are split into numbers.

Another detail we have been playing around with is removing the cigarette butt all together, and playing with the typography on its own (see 1.4a and 2.3b in attachment). The unique dynamically flowing text is strong enough to stand on its own without visual representation.

Of the cigarette images we have found that 1 and 2 fit the overall dynamic the most (seen in 1.1 and 1.3). And of the overall logos we are leaning towards 1.2a or 1.4b of Gotham, and 2.2 (with a different cigarette) of Helvetica.

We would also love to meet up with you as a group and discuss the logo as well as a few concepts we have been throwing around for a print campaign. Unfortunately the only days most of the group has free is Thursday and Sunday if that is alright.

Would it also be possible to get a contact number in case we need to speak to you via phone?

You can contact me on 0450730683

Sorry for the long winded message, hope to hear from you soon!

-Bill & the Gridpunk team

PS, just a last note, all of the I's on Illawarra are coming out funny in the pdf, they are looking a bit larger and not aligned to the rest of the text, this is just a technical difficulty and only affects the pdf. The I's appear perfect in the illustrator file so don't let that deter your decisions in any way.
